My Story

Team Bennett (including Flossy dog) are climbing Snowdon as a challenge to themselves and raise money for The Makaton Charity. Makaton has played a massive part in our family as Lucy used Makaton as her only form of communication for many years. Although she is now very verbal she still loves to use Makaton and particularly enjoys signing along with Singing Hands.

Team Bennett and The Makaton Charity would be very grateful of any donations no matter how small. We have been training hard over the summer in all weathers! Thank you for reading this, please see below for further information about the challenge and The Makaton Charity.

The Challenge

On Saturday 11th September 2021 a team of 'MakaHikers' are taking on the majestic and awe-inspiring Mount Snowdon in Wales. Rising 1,085 meters above sea level, there’s something wild and breathtakingly beautiful about the Snowdonia landscape, with soaring, sharp and magnificent peaks rising up high above the deep welsh valleys.

Depending on their experience and abilities the ‘MakaHikers’ will set off at different times to tackle Snowdon, the route will be a challenging 8-9 mile ascending hike taking around 6 -8 hours to summit and return.

Once everyone has reached the summit there will be a Makaton ‘sing and sign’ to celebrate our achievements and promote the wonderful work of The Makaton Charity.

We would be delighted if you were able to donate and support our ‘MakaHikers’, to help us raise much needed funds for this wonderful charity.

About Makaton

Makaton is a language programme that combines signs, symbols and speech to provide multiple ways for someone to communicate. The use of signs can support people who have unclear or no speech and symbols can help those who have limited speech and cannot or prefer not to sign. Makaton transforms the lives of those with communication difficulties by giving them a way to express themselves independently which is proven to overcome frustration and promote inclusion. There are currently in excess of 2.2 million people in the UK with speech, language and communication difficulties and over 1 million Makaton users.

The Makaton Charity exists to ensure that everyone living with learning or communication difficulties has the tools and resources they need to understand and be understood. The Charity aims to ensure that as many people as possible have access to Makaton, to achieve our goal of a truly inclusive society. Visit our website makaton.org to find out more about the impact Makaton has on beneficiaries and their families or support networks.
